Expressive Arts

Expressive Arts is a process I use to expand creativity and to facilitate change and growth. Expressive arts is a creative process that uses art, movement, drawing, painting, sculpting, music, writing, sound, and improvisation in a safe and supportive setting to foster personal and group growth (N. Rogers, 1999). My philosophy involves using Person-Centered Expressive Arts (N. Rogers, 1999) which refers to developing congruence and using one's inner wisdom while being immersed in the process of expressive arts.

The findings from my research (Goslin-Jones, 2010) indicated that experience with expressive arts can result in:

  • •   Change and personal transformation
  • •   Deeper and more creative relationships with self and others
  • •   Bridge to preverbal experiences and to creativity
  • •   Creative expression expands one’s spiritual awareness

Some of the changes that my research participants experienced included:

  • •   Personal growth
  • •   Healing
  • •   Deeper relationships
  • •   Being present and experiencing flow
  • •   Discovery and insight
  • •   Bridge to preverbal knowledge
  • •   Bridge to creative process and product

My findings indicated that using expressive arts can result in new skills that are valuable to the workplace including:

  • •   Enhanced abilities in communication
  • •   Conflict resolution
  • •   Creativity
  • •   Decision-making
  • •   Empathy
  • •   Intuition
  • •   Problem-solving
  • •   Maintaining relationships
